In the year it was created, there were nine murders in El Paso but there were hundreds of murders in the sister city (many consider El Paso and Juarez part of one metropolis they are so integrated) of Ciudad Juarez. There are nine gunshots in the top of the painting and hundreds from a shotgun blast in the bottom of the painting representing this.
